Wrong-Way Driving

Safeguarding Lives: GovComm's AI Solution to Combat the Growing Threat of Wrong-Way Driving

In recent years, an alarming spike in incidents of wrong-way driving has emerged as a critical public safety concern, with a 34% surge in wrong-way deaths on divided highways between 2015 and 2018, as reported by Route 50. While these incidents are relatively rare in comparison to other traffic accidents, they prove to be disproportionally fatal because they are often high-speed and head-on, claiming the lives of approximately 500 people a year in the country. Therefore, there is significant public interest in combatting the crisis, and state transportation leaders are rallying behind the Vision Zero mission to eliminate traffic injuries and fatalities.
To achieve this mission, they are turning to innovative technology solutions to mitigate the growing wrong-way crisis. Florida spearheaded the fight against wrong-way driving with the deployment of Wrong-Way Vehicle Detection Systems. Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin have taken up the gauntlet by launching similar programs. There’s no doubt that other states will follow suit and hopefully sooner rather than later to be proactive rather than reactive to tragedies.
GovComm’s groundbreaking Wrong-Way Vehicle Detection System, leveraging cutting-edge AI technology, is proving to be a game-changer in enhancing road safety and driving toward the Vision Zero mission of safeguarding lives.

Cutting-Edge Technology: As a pioneer in artificial intelligence, GovComm has engineered a breakthrough detection platform and AI engine that resides on a compact NVIDIA® embedded computer module. Boasting extensive CPU and GPU resources, this system ensures unparalleled speed and accuracy in detection. By promptly activating warning alerts, the technology provides wrong-way drivers with timely notifications, averting potential disasters, and simultaneously furnishing authorities with life-saving information.

While competing systems are designed for similar detection, they do not have artificial intelligence that makes our system smarter and safer.

Detection Optimizer™: GovComm’s proprietary Detection Optimizer™, safeguarded by U.S. Patent Application No. 18/326,941, takes accuracy to the next level and eliminates false alerts characteristic of its competitors. Leveraging Machine and Deep Learning, it extracts sequential still images from bi-spectrum camera streams, accurately plotting vehicle movement within defined detection zones.

The system’s advanced logic confirms the direction and distances of travel between monitored still frames, eliminating false alerts.
With video analytic calculations performed at a remarkable rate of 60 times per second, GovComm ensures wrong-way incidents are confirmed within tenths of a second, setting it apart from competitors with slower on-board analytics, prone to false alerts and therefore obsolescence.
Robust and Reliable: Engineered to endure harsh environments, GovComm’s technology provides robust ingress protection against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water, while adhering to NEMA TS2 standards and ensuring sustainability under hurricane-force winds. This design ensures sustainability in all kinds of environments whether there is snow or scorching heat, establishing GovComm as a reliable and durable solution provider.
Operational Excellence: At GovComm, customers always come first, and we prioritize operational excellence, security, and reliability in technology solutions. Our ITS equipment is laboratory-tested and manufactured utilizing an ISO 9001-certified quality management system to ensure that our customers receive equipment with the highest quality and highest availability existing in the market.
Proven Track Record: From our humble beginnings in a small downtown Miami office, GovComm’s journey is marked by milestones including certification by the Florida Department of Transportation in 2014. In 2015, our first intelligent transportation system camera systems were installed by the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority.
